H-harness, Y-harness, safety harness, lead harness… Dog owners need to differentiate between many different harnesses and decide which one is best suited to their four-legged friend. You can find out what types there are and what specific advantages and disadvantages they have in our article.
The Norwegian harness
With the Norwegian harness, you attach a torso strap to a horizontal chest strap on both sides. You also attach the former behind the front legs of your four-legged friend directly around the chest. This also gives you a very good feeling at all times as to how your pet is doing with this harness and lets you know if there are any problems.
Some models also have a loop at the back to provide additional safety and allow you to hold on to your dog if a dangerous situation arises.
Advantages of the Norwegian glider
Unlike many other types of harness, the Norwegian harness does not distribute the pressure exerted on sensitive parts of the body when walking. Instead, it is directed to the chest, which protects the larynx, for example. In addition, you can put this model on and take it off your dog very quickly, saving you valuable time.
Thanks to the practical pressure distribution, the Norwegian harness is also suitable for dogs that have problems wearing one or are generally sensitive. This is often the case, for example, when the harness is worn over sensitive areas of the body, such as surgical scars.
Disadvantages of the Norwegian harness
Compared to the harness mentioned above, you have fewer options for adjusting this harness to your four-legged friend’s body. This means that it cannot be used for quite as long. Ideally, you should always check how your dog feels with this model and if he has obvious problems, you should choose a different version. It can also happen that the Norwegian harness slips during hectic movements due to the low contact with the dog’s body. It is therefore less suitable for very excited or anxious four-legged friends.
The harness
You have probably already spotted a dog wearing a Julius K9 dog harness on a walk. However, there are several other models of this design. The saddle harness is similar in design to the Norwegian harness. However, it has a slightly larger back plate.
Advantages of the saddle harness
The saddle harness gives your four-legged friend sufficient freedom of movement and is therefore suitable for a wide range of everyday activities, such as walks, joint sporting excursions or trips to the vet. At the same time, you can put this model on and take it off your four-legged friend very quickly and most models are very robust and durable.
Disadvantages of the saddle harness
If you have a rather small and petite dog, a harness like this can look a little bulky. In addition, it is often reported that moisture (or sweat) can collect under the harness in very hot or rainy weather. This is naturally unpleasant for the four-legged friend and should be avoided.
The Y harness
The Y harness is similar in design to the lead harness. However, as the name suggests, it has a chest area that is shaped like a Y. Many versions are made of skin-friendly and thickly padded materials. The Y harness usually rests on the animal’s shoulder blades and is also quite close to the armpit.
Advantages of the Y harness
In contrast to other types of harness, the special design of the Y-harness means that it is not possible for a very excited or hectic dog to accidentally jump out of it. Another advantage of this variant is that it is easy and uncomplicated to put on and take off. Your pet doesn’t even need to lift its paws. The Y-harness is therefore a very good choice, especially when things have to be done very quickly.
Disadvantages of the Y harness
The Y-harness fits very snugly on the dog’s body. If you have a four-legged friend that quickly feels restricted in its freedom of movement, it is therefore only suitable to a limited extent. Always choose a model that is made of high-quality materials. Otherwise, unpleasant and painful chafing can quickly occur. In the worst case scenario, this can even lead to eczema, both of which should of course be avoided at all costs.
The Step-In harness
The step-in harness is only suitable for certain dog breeds. It is pulled over the front legs of the four-legged friend in a similar way to human trousers. You then create a connection to the shoulders.
Advantages of the Step-In harness
Unlike many other models, the step-in harness is not put on over the head. This is particularly advantageous if you have a four-legged friend who does not like this at all. The step-in harness is also suitable for puppies and growing dogs, as it exerts very little pressure on the chest and neck area.
Disadvantages of the Step-In harness
As this model is very tight-fitting, it is not suitable for strong and large four-legged friends. This is because their freedom of movement could quickly be restricted. There would also be a risk of painful chafing. Another small disadvantage is that it is quite complicated to put on and take off.
The harness
The lead harness is often called an H-harness and is used very frequently. It is based on a robust back bar with two loops. One of these is placed around the chest of the four-legged friend and one around the neck. There is also a strap that connects the two together. This means you always have your pet well under control.
Advantage of the harness
The size of the lead harness is usually adjustable. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of four-legged friends and can also be used from the very beginning. For example, you can get your puppy used to the dog harness straight away and use it for many years. Another great advantage of this variant is that it is not only suitable for walks, but also for other joint activities, such as hiking, jogging or cycling.
Disadvantages of the harness
In addition to the numerous advantages, this harness has one small disadvantage, which is easy to counteract. The harness can only fulfill its purpose if it fits properly. Otherwise, your four-legged friend may experience pain on the chest or larynx or chafing. And of course you want to avoid this. That’s why it’s important to choose a harness that is adjustable.
